Afternoon play - 'Black Out.'

Just got this for next week. Julian is doing another afternnon play.

Time: 14:15 to 15:00 (45 minutes long).
When: Thursday 17th August on BBC Radio Four

Black Out.
By Damian Barr and Laura Lockington. Dan and Lucy are about to compete for the same job. They are also in total denial about a recent one-night stand. Then they get stuck in a lift together. Can things get any worse?

I got to listen to this live on my computer it was quite good. A bit of a slow story for my liking but perfectly performed - of course. For all of you who've not heard it yet - it does pick up but you must listen right to the very end.

Black Out was the excellent play on Radio 4 this afternoon. It was an interesting play, concerning Dan (JRT) & Lucy (Nicola Walker) who had a one night stand together fairly recently & then later get stuck in a lift together…much to their chagrin!

Oh my gosh, who wouldn't want to be stranded in a lift [or anywhere] with the Golden Boy?!
It was an interesting play & Julian was fabulous as Dan. His sarcasm & quick wit was very like Dr Mac. You could almost ‘see’ the petulance on his face when arguing with Lucy. His quietly sexy voice, specifically when reminding Lucy of the night they had spent together, & the kissing noises made me purrrrrrrrr with delight. (stops to cool off a bit!]

So realistic was Julian’s interpretation of the script, I actually winced at the bit where, when trying to escape from the lift, Dan jumped & hurt his ankle. Julian always gives a very polished & professional performance & yet makes every part his own. He seems to gain in confidence & stature with every performance. More power to your elbow Lad!

Nicola Walker was also very good as the quietly efficient & determined Lucy, but vulnerable at the same time.. She has a very pleasant voice & one could quite believe that she & Dan would make a great couple. ( I believe Nicola is the actress who played Ruth in BBC’s Spooks)

A very enjoyable 45 minutes with an inspired twist at the end!

Another triumph for JRT!

Just to agree with previous posts, a great performance from Julian as always. A fairly straightforward, although well observed romantic storyline, but with a good sting in the tail!

Having watched the vid on the making of Basil, I did smile at the sound effects of Julian taking off his trainers, and again of him climbing and jumping - I'd like to have seen that. As for the kissing sounds....(!)

Anyone who didn't hear it should definitely 'listen again'.

Fantastic flippin fantastic, the writing is excellent and both Julian and Nicola were excellent, v funny, v original and v contemporary..my favourite radio play to date.

I'm in agreement with everything above, great performances and a good story.

I especially liked the last few minutes, when his voice goes all low and growly . And I had to laugh when they got the banana out of his bag - it reminded me of the 'bananary' kiss which is hopefully still to come on GW.

Totally in agreement with everything already said. Black Out is possibly the best radio play JRT has been in. I thought it was funny, emotional, it was very real. Obviously the gravelly voice and the kissing sounds did a lot for my enjoyment of the play, but I thought on the whole it was very well written.

For 80% of the time I was expecting it to be some dark, poignant account of a terrorist attack, counteracted by the whole Big-Brothery theme at the end; it just displayed the UKs pre-occupation, even in times of terror with all things reality TV.

Was it just me, or did anyone else picture Lucy to be the blonde lass from Shaun of the Dead? Not Lucy Davis...the other one. She didn't stike me as an older, dark haired woman.

Oh yes!! It was a brilliant 45 mins... I have it on my MP3 and just having Julian's voice purring in my ears is total BLISS !!!

I listened again yesterday and thought the play was fab! Got rather nervy when he got on top of the lift...pathetic I know.


JRT's voice is just so gorgeous. He made his character so believable. What a sweetie!!!

I see that in the same week that we are being treated to Julian reading the 'book at bedtime' they are also repeating Blackout as the afternoon play on Friday 16th November at 3.15. I know that many of you (me included) rate this as one of his best ever audio plays.
