Quiz Night
I just stumbled on this:
Julian and Stephen Mangan are co-hosting a charity quiz night on 24 June. Here's the link: http://www.nationalbrainappeal.org/gree ... uiz-night/
Wish I was able to go!

Re: Quiz Night
Well I have spoken to the nice man at the end of the phone and currently have one table reserved. If you would like to join us, please let me know.
If you would like to book your own table, at the time of writing, there were still spaces, so call the number and leave a message if nobody answers - they are very good at calling back!

Re: Quiz Night
I thought I would just post a short report on the quiz evening, which was a really enjoyable way to give money to charity!
Well, we had a traditional start at a Pizza Express, and then headed off to UCL, and got there very early so we had the pick of the tables. We chose a table at the front, then eagle eyed Lucy spotted that it was a ‘Gassers’ table, so we had to move very quickly to a ‘Slashers’ spot. We spent some time debating names, but finally settled for the Topmeilers (not sure why in the end) then spent another 5 minutes debating whether this was a German/Swiss spelling with an ‘E’, or an anglicised version without. In honour of the Swiss heritage we chose the ‘e’ version. We had a spare ticket in the end so my son came along as he was at a loose end. I think at this point he did wonder what he was getting himself into… When the organisers collected the names it was clear almost everyone else had gone for medical themes, apart from us and another table of GW fans. I think it was around then that we had worked out that there wasn’t a Green Wing round, so the revision that Kate, Lucy and Sylvia had done was not going to be of much use! There were 18 teams in total, 10 on the Gassers side, 8 on the Slashers.
Julian was already around, when we got there, pacing about behind the scenes and on his phone. No sign of Steve though… At 8 o’clock Julian appeared at the front, to tell us that Steve was delayed and would arrive shortly. Then we got on with the quiz – Julian read out the questions and we scratched our heads for the answers.
Steve then arrived just before the second round - apparently he had been filming somewhere in the back of beyond with Sue Perkins.
There were a couple of fairly obvious JRT and Steve related questions. Steve's family had taken a table and they managed to get a GW question wrong to much amusement. At the first interval Julian came over for a short chat, and the end, an enormous queue for photos with Julian and Steve appeared. We all decided that we didn’t want to join the queue, so hung around chatting instead. There was an official photographer though, who took loads of photos, so eventually you will get to see them I expect!
We didn’t come anywhere near being the highest scoring team, but neither were we the lowest, so that was a relief! Then the scores of the Gassers and Slashers were added up and averaged because Steve’s Gassers had more teams . Julian and the Slashers was clearly the intelligent option as the Slashers won on averages!
At the end, there was a raffle for some scrubs, signed by Julian and Steve, and they were won by a neurologist from another team, so not sure when he will get the chance to wear them... Keep your eyes peeled on ebay! Another prize, tickets for Sunday in Hyde Park with Rod Stewart headlining did the rounds. They were won first by the same neurologist.......who put them back in the pot, then by Julian........ who also put them back in. then by a lady who couldn't go........... so finally they auctioned them!
Speaking to the organisers at the end, they were very pleased with the result and with their takings on the night, all towards a very good cause. If you would like to donate, or to attend any of the other events they are running to raise funds, you can do it here:

If I have forgotten anything I am sure the other ladies will fill you in on the details... Thank you to the Topmeilers for a great evening out

Re: Quiz Night
Thanks for that Kim, sounds a fun evening. Pity all the 'revising' of GW episodes proved to be a bit futile [any excuse to watch it again though!]. Wonder why they didn't ask more GW questions.....particularly as they'd used Julian & Steve in their promotional pictures.
Very courageous of your son to 'brave' the GW gang - hope there was no hysteria when JRT & SM appeared? Still, with all those medics on hand you'd have been in safe hands.
Good that you managed to have a brief chat with Julian too, despite him being glued to his phone....some things never change!
Nice that the Slashers won too........keeps the 'rivalry' between J & S alive!

" A few very charming ladies down at my Dad's whist drive have been very kind (average age 75-93). My brother is the headmaster of a special school and I know some of his dinner ladies have been very kind to me as well. "

Re: Quiz Night
Well done one and all sounds like a really great evening. Sorry I couldn't join you but my very ancient Auntie has been admitted to hospital and I'm spending nights there with her at present (dont ask!). Anyway it sounds like you did a great job AND got to see Julian and Stephen - what a night! Let's hope a similar opportunity presents itself before too long - I'd love to meet you all (at last) and it would be great to help raise funds for such a good cause - particularly as I've just been diagnosed with MS myself. Anyway - hats off to you all XXX
Re: Quiz Night
I'm glad for everyone who was at the quiz night and saw Julian and Stephen, and had a good time. and I'm a little sorry for myself because I did not see it. Chatterbox thanks for the story. There are photos of this evening somewhere?

Re: Quiz Night
All I can add to Kim's account was that, for once, Julian seemed quite competitive and keen to win and Steve (who was probably knackered) was quite low key - it might also have been because his family were there:-) Steve got a good ribbing when he turned up late. The chemistry between the two of them is still very apparent and they were having a good laugh judging the caption competition.

Re: Quiz Night
Rubytuesday - sorry to hear your news about your own and your auntie's health. I will be posting details about this year's Bridgathon later this week, so maybe we will see you there, depending on how you are feeling?
Tutt-sweet -it wasn't really a fan event and very relaxed, which made for a much nicer evening.
Tiana - hopefully there will be photos soon, and I will put a link to them when I get them.
Skeadugenga - yes, they still make a good double act!

Hai guise!
Yes, a great night was had by all, a perfect summary by Kim. It was great to see you again and also great to see Julian again, for the first time since 2009! He seems to look healthier now than he did then, I thought, which is good. You're all fab and I think we were a passable quiz team given our pre-quiz admissions of how much we all thought we sucked at general knowledge! Although I'm still mystified by how our best round was Pop Culture.
I'll keep an eye out for those photos too - Kim, when you were talking to him, did he perchance tell you his name or where the photos would be posted?
See some of you at the Bridgathon this autumn,
link =)
