The River King

Postby smoo2 » Fri Jul 07, 2006 5:49 pm

Has anyone seen the dvd of this film yet? I was in Blockbuster earlier and noticed that it was on their new releases shelf. As I have 5 tokens to use up before the end of August, I might be able to hire it without the other half moaning when he sees JRT in it!

I haven't seen it yet... anyone care to do a review so that I can decide how high it should go on my list of unseen Julian still to be collected :)

Someone on the Channel 4 GW forum has watched this and said that Julian is actually playing the cello in this film. I must see it! :D

Just ordered a second hand copy from Amazon - 'twas the cello that finally tipped me over the edge. Let you know when I've seen it.

lmao! I did EXACTLY the same. As soon as a cellist scene was mentioned I was on Ebay faster than you can say 'ebay!'

Well I watched The River King this evening. Quiet and atmospheric mystery with some nice touches, although I get the feeling that the book has probably been edited somewhat (I haven't read it). Julian plays an unsympathetic teacher at a school where a boy has died, and I probably can't say much more without giving away the plot.

Yes he does play the cello, and more of that would have been very welcome, as we only get a few short glimpses. I have got some pics, although I don't know how to get them on here - but I'm sure someone can sort that out better than me.

I finally watched this film and enjoyed the aforementioned cello playing very much, I even quite like the hair, but definitely not enough screen time for Julian! And without giving the plot away, how could she do that to him! For shame! :jd:

I got the DVD a few weeks ago. The ending sucks, but it's quite a good film. Very slow and atmospheric.

Monday morning will find me hammering on the door of HMV...

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember it was only available in Region 1 so I doubt HMV sells it - Amazon does, though.

£6.97 from Amazon UK...I may just have to indulge!

Cheers for the linkage!
Hmm, I'm sure I can justify this as an end-of-exams present to myself...

...ahh sod it. JRT playing the cell is reason enough!

I got hold of the DVD in HMV about a week ago. I had to rummage for it though, it wasn't in new releases it was with the old DVDs. If my mind serves me correctly, it was £8.

I haven't yet had time to watch it, but the cello playing is very intriguing!

OMG! Does that mean it's now available in Region 1 DVD?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :jd:

P.S. In my Jan. 21st post, what I meant to say/type was Region 2.

If you search in the dvd section for Julian Rhind-tutt it has a region 1 copy on their.

I have just ordered a region 2 copy.....I really have to stop spending lots of money on Amazon.
