New Series-A Charles Paris Mystery
JRT is in a new Radio 4 Series with Bill Nighy called 'A Charles Paris Mystery-Sicken and so die'. It begins on Weds August 30th at 11.30a,m and is in four parts (hurrah!).
'Bill Nighy returns as Charles Paris, actor-cum-amateur sleuth. Charles has landed a role in Twelth Night but it seems there's a poisoner on the loose.'
JRT plays the part of Alex. The action is punctuated by a soundtrack from David Bowie to Jimi Hendrix but the RT says it is a mystery for the middle-aged listener who adores staying tuned in to Radio 4, but still feels they could be up there as a backing singer with the Stones next week!! How about the hoards of JRT fans who adore staying in to listen to his smooth, mellifluous voice? RT seem to like it anyway, so happy listening everyone!

A few more details re the new radio 4 play that Julian is in .
A Charles Paris Mystery –
Sicken And So Die Ep 1/4
Wednesday 30 August
11.30am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4
Bill Nighy stars as louche lush Charles Paris (Bill Nighy) returns as alcoholic actor-cum-amateur sleuth Charles Paris, from the series of hit novels by Simon Brett.
As ever, Charles is his own worst enemy, a louche lush who can resist anything except temptation – especially in the form of women and alcohol. His intentions may be good but somehow the results always go wrong. There is no question that Charles Paris is flawed; he has a drink problem and is incapable of sustaining his marriage to the long-suffering Frances.
Charles Paris is an actor. He would say he was unlucky in his choice of agents, but he has at least succeeded in landing himself the role of Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night. But when the cast and crew begin suffering from gastric poisoning, and then one of them dies on stage, he is convinced there is a murderer amongst the company.
To make things worse his flat has exploded – a gas leak and a lit cigarette not being the best of partners. Still, this does at least mean he is temporarily lodging with Frances and hoping as ever to wheedle his way back into her affections – but it seems he has a rival for her heart, a young Canadian professor called Scott. So on top of finding a poisoner and coping with the radical reworking of Shakespeare that the young Romanian director is imposing, Charles must now find a way to compete for Frances's attention.
Bill Nighy stars as Charles Paris, with Suzanne Burden as Frances, Jon Glover as Maurice, JULIAN RHIND-TUTT as Alex, Ryan McCluskey as Scott and Peter Wight as Ken. Jeremy Front also adapted the Charles Paris mystery A Series Of Murders for Radio 4.
Producer/Sally Avens
I can't believe that I'll miss the first episode due to a hospital appointment!!!!

" A few very charming ladies down at my Dad's whist drive have been very kind (average age 75-93). My brother is the headmaster of a special school and I know some of his dinner ladies have been very kind to me as well. "

So did anybody listen to this live?
I had a mini-crisis, as I'd recorded it on Sky+ (or so I thought), only to find I'd got my am and pm muddled up - Thank gawd (or aunty bbc) for listen again!
Very entertaining play, with Bill Nighy in his droll, laid back persona - what a wonderful voice he has. Julian appeared towards the end, with yet another interesting accent as the difficult director of a play - nicely timed and witty.. made me laugh out loud in a couple of places - wonderful stuff!
If you haven't listened again yet, I suggest you do so... continues next week on Wednesday at 11.30 am

I agree with everyone about this. The script was very droll (well done Bill Nighy!) and I loved Julian's accent!
If anyone can get just a little clip of the 'Sex sex sex' bit that would be VERY appealing! *
*DISCLAIMER: In entirely innocent admiration of Julian's fine vocal talents and acting craft of course!

Sicken and so die got an excellent review in The Independent on Sunday yesterday. Although Julian wasn't mentioned by name the reviewer (Nicholas Lezard) did say ' And relish the informed and merciless way the pretensions of avant-garde theatre directors are exposed. Its use of theatrical jargon indicates that someone knows whereof they speak.... Nighy deserves great applause, but so do the rest of the cast, the director, and whoever adapted it for radio.'
Still on listen again, and the next episode is on Wednesday at 11.30 - might get a bit more of Julian this week... hopefully saying 'zzexxxx' some more

Well who listened to the episode today? Bit less pace than last week but Julian continues to play the difficult director very well - I like the scene with the unbuttoned breeches, linen shirts and t-shirts with slogans - nicely witty. The story is moving along quite well too, and Bill Nighy continues to be very entertaining.
Should be up on listen again by now.

Caught episode 2 on listen again - agree with you chatterbox, it continues to entertain and there were some funny exchanges. And the the plot thickens right at the end!
Love the music clips used in this show - there were a couple of Kinks excerpts yesterday which made me pine for Green Wing and Mac.

Just listened to the third installment the other day, Bill Nighy is brilliant, but there was a lot less of Julian aka Alex this time. Can't wait for part 4 next week, although worryingly JRT is not listed in the cast in the Radio Times - I was fully expecting him to be bumped off in Episode 3 because of this, but so far the sex sex sex mad director is still alive
