Faust
Ruth has just emailed me this from the BBC website...
Woman's Hour Drama – Faust Ep 1/5
Monday 18 to Friday 22 February
10.45-11.00am BBC RADIO 4
This dramatic new adaptation of one of the greatest stories ever told stars Julian Rhind-Tutt as Faust and Mark Gatiss as Mephistopheles.
Faust sells his soul to Mephistopheles in order to have a good time on Earth. The story of Faust isn't lost in time and remains potent to this day – who hasn't toyed with skipping the life to come to secure the pleasures of the moment?
This adaptation, by Martin Jenkins and Jonathan Holloway, draws on a multitude of sources and original writing to conjure a Faust for our times. Faust is a donnish wannabe rake – good with words and spells and keen on sex, but not getting enough. Mephistopheles can help, so a deal is done and he puts Faust in the way of Martha, a rather dowdy has-been who clings to her memories of past glories as the muse for a trashy pop singer. Martha unwittingly makes her daughter, Grechen, available to Faust's sprouting libido but things begin to go wrong. Grechen's brother, Valentin, isn't keen on the men hanging around his sister. He is killed but, before he dies, he curses his sister. Gretchen dies and Faust's time is coming to an end. He tries to escape, as everyone does, but he cannot. Mephistopheles moves on, sweet-talking Wagner, and another contract is promised.
The cast also includes Pippa Haywood as Martha, Jasmine Hyde as Grechen, Paul Mundell as Valentin and Thom Tuck as Wagner.
Yay, yay and yay again
Thanks Ruth

Sounds good Kim - thanks.
...and Pippa and Julian working together again - should be very good - looking forward to it
Oh dear not another one of his characters that seem to have woman/relationship probems.....it's like he is being type-cast all over again?!

Got this from Google alerts.
Lecturer's writing to air on Radio 4
By Independent reporter
Theatre Arts lecturer Jonathan Holloway
A MIDDLESEX University lecturer will hear two of his adapted works of fiction broadcast on BBC Radio 4 this month.
Theatre Arts lecturer Jonathan Holloway has adapted German Johan Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust - one of the most respected works in German literature.
In this dramatic poem the protagonist sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for knowledge and power.
Mr Holloway has adapted five, 15-minute episodes to be broadcast as part of Women's Hour at 10.45am and 7.45pm each day, Monday to Friday from February 11 to 15.
The adaptation stars Julian Rhind-Tutt from TV show Green Wing - as well as Mark Gatiss, star of The League of Gentlemen.
Mr Holloway's second piece of work is The Fortunes of War, which is based on The Levant trilogy by Olivia Manning.
This classic Second World War trilogy is about a British couple who have escaped war-torn Europe, only to find the conflict arriving on their doorstep in their new home in Egypt.
Mr Holloway has adapted episodes four, five and six, all of which are an hour long.
They will be broadcast as a part of the Radio 4's Classic Serial on Sundays at 3pm on February 17 and 24, and March 2, and repeated on the following Saturday evenings at 9pm.
Honeysuckle Weekes of the TV series Foyle's War stars in the adaptation.
Mr Holloway combines lecturing on theatre arts at Middlesex University with directing and writing for stage and radio.
He is the founder of the Red Shift Theatre Company, which tours all over the UK with its innovative and varied productions.
Something to look forward to again!

" A few very charming ladies down at my Dad's whist drive have been very kind (average age 75-93). My brother is the headmaster of a special school and I know some of his dinner ladies have been very kind to me as well. "

Nice little photo of Julian in the Telegraph this morning (not worth rushing out to buy!) Faust is the radio choice for today. I haven't heard it yet, will catch it later on listen again.

Listened to the first episode today - very dark and Faust certainly has an eerie and twisted imagination!
Julian seems to be relishing in playing evil characters/ characters mixed up in dark thoughts for, he comes across as having once again, "grabbed the bull by its horns" and doing a fabulous job! - looking forward to tomorrow - although hope it doesn't get too scarey as I am home alone for the next few days and my imagination tends to get the better of me when I am left alone with my thoughts!

I agree with all that everyone else says. Julian was on top form, yet again. I have to agree with you too FQ, I love it when he gets close to the microphone & his speech gets all low & breathy.....
Only one complaint...it was far too short! Looking forward to tonight's episode & the rest of the week too!
On another tack, anyone hear on the news that Barclaycard profits are up?...wonder who that could be down to?!!!

I hope this means we can expect more adverts!!
Anyway, I have to say that I've never really been all that interested in radio plays but thought I'd give this one a go. However, I had horrific trouble with radios/internet/television yesterday but by now had my heart set on listening to it, especially after reading your praising comments.
So I found it today on the website after college (when my internet decided to fix itself! ) and I absolutely loved it!
Julian just made me squee!! Looking forward to the rest of it now.
So a big thank you to you ladies, for introducing me to a world I might not have known...!! =]
Mac: How are the people of Insania without their Mighty Queen?
Sue White: Oh well you know, they're alright. I left them post-it notes with instructions.

Absolutely loved Fauster's sleepy stirring beginning...Julian sounded lovely... he also sounded a bit nasal - hope our boy isn't getting a cold?
When Faust said to the devil, "I want some affection.....a little tenderness" I was like ahhh bless - I'll give you some sweetie!
Todays episode was very good too - not much of Faust though *sulks* but Pippa was very good and she actually sounded rather like a desparate Joanna Clore when it came to subject of men!
Looking forward to tomorrow's episcode!
