Future of www.julianrhind-tutt.co.uk - Warning long post
Hi All
Firstly before I get all doom and gloom can I say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the site and the forum since its conception 7 months ago. I think we can all agree that at times its been a complete hoot and we've made some great friendships through our appreciation of JRT. In particular I would like to thank Hells, who although she hasn't been around lately has been an absolute gem to me and has really helped me with the forum and my technophobery.
Anyway,we need to discuss what's going to happen with the site and I'm really sorry I need to wear my 'serious/doom and gloom' hat but there are some issues that need to be discussed. So in a quick list format these are some of the things:
1. Julian is now moving onto other things, it would seem in particular his audio work, this makes it even more difficult to have access to him.
2. Unfortunately despite numerous attempts we've not had any contact from Julian and as stated at point 1 I think it will be highly unlikely that we will get the chance to discuss the website/forum with him.
3. The site is continuing to grow and this of course brings us some wonderful new visitors but also brings us a couple of issues:
a. Its more prominent/noticebale which means we will be far less likely to get away with posting any copyright material, which may result in files and images being deleted.
b. I've had to increase the bandwith again and can't really afford to do so. If I need to do this again, I can't manage it on my own. Some of you may have already noticed that the board has been 'down' a couple of times, if we exceed bandwith again there's no way I can do it as I also need to pay the annual amounts for hosting, domains etc
4. My time. As many of you know the site has been a labour of love for me and has taken up a considerable amount of my time. Although I love doing it and throughly enjoy the friendships on the forum at times we all need to move on.
5. Technical Abilities. As you are all aware my techinical abilities are somewhat limited and if I really want to see the site improve this is something that I either need to work on myself or will need to find someone else who can assist.
Ok so that's all the doom and gloom bit done, but hopefully now onto a more positive note.
Firstly the website and forum will continue for at least the next couple of months, so there's no need for any urgent knicker twisting.
Really I would just like your thoughts/ideas and most importantly suggestions as to what we can perhaps do to ensure the survival of the website and forum.
I know none of you would wish to see this come to an end but I feel we really need to look at the longer term view and what direction we can take the site in.
Once again I want to offer my huge thanks for everyone's support as I couldn't have done it without you all and I am so proud of what we've achieved and in particular the fact that we have such a nice bunch of people of the forum.
Best wishes
J

Jools, I'm sure I speak for most of us here when I say that we are all very grateful for the work you have put into this to get such a wonderful site together, and so we must be able to find some way between us to keep it going.
Costs are one issue - will it get easier as GW fades into the background? As for technical stuff... trouble is I'm not exactly renowned for my technical expertise either!
Hmmm MSN 'thought-showers' session anyone?

OK, I'm only new but I think it would be shame to lose everything you guys have got here. What can we all do to help? I'm absolutely abysmal with technology but if I can help I will! Between us there must be a way of doing it.
Whatever happens, a massive thank you for all the work you've put in and bringing a lovely lot of people together.

Sorry to hear about all of this, Jools!
I agree with what someone suggested there; why not move this board to a free server? I know it will lose the 'julianrhind-tutt.co.uk' tag, but surely noone will really mind? And surely that will free up some bandwidth and money for the main site to run okay again? After all, theres a lot that can be made of a free site with the right know-how.
If you need anyone else to mod or do owt like that, I'd do it for you. After all, I must make it up to you for spilling that drink over your person...
And I could do you images, and hold them all in my own photobucket or whatever...
*wracks brain*

I've only just registered but I've been a regular visitor to this site for a long time now - lurking in the background but not feeling brave enough to admit to my JRT obssession! I felt compelled to reply to Jools' post because I would be genuinely upset if this website was to no longer exist. In my sad little life a visit to this site can be the highlight of my day! I think Jools has done a brilliant job in creating a user-friendly and well-thought-out website that is packed full of stuff, all perfectly categorised. I'm sure JRT would be really chuffed if he had a look at it (I bet you he has at some stage!) and I honestly think it's one of the best websites I've seen. You do a really good job at keeping it up-to-date as well.
If possible Jools I really think you should try and keep it going, at least until all the Green Wing interest has died down and then see how it goes. I don't think it really matters that Julian has not had any contact - I don't really think anyone would have expected him to.
From the way the website looks I'd say you had excellent technical abilities - tons better than me anyway, although that's not saying a lot! - but admittedly the bandwidth is probably the biggest problem. I too would like to help keep it going but again am rubbish with technology.
Will get off my soapbox now but definitely vote to keep this brill website alive!

Jools, it would be tragic to lose this. And although GW may have ended JRT will always be doing something new and this is the perfect place to find out about it.
Personally, I'd be more than happy to contribute financially, if that would help. Could you make it a subscription site with maybe different levels of self-selecting payment? Those who can pay a bit more would, I'm sure, volunteer to.
By the way, for anyone who went to the Convention and was disappointed he didn't turn up, he has been filming 6 days out of 7 all through January, so he couldn't have come even if he had wanted to. No reason for him to lose brownie points I think.

I agree with Cello. I'd be quite happy to pay something towards the upkeep of the site. Too much love & hard work has gone into it to lose it....& where else would we find out what JRT's been up to?!
I never expected JRT to make an appearance at the Convention but it's nice to know he's in gainful employment! I just hope it's worth him cutting & dying that gorgeous mane for?!

Been thinking about this some more, and picking up on Cello's suggestion, what about free to look, pay to participate as a principle? That way, anyone who seriously contributes to the bandwidth issue will be contributing to the costs. Otherwise, what about taking advertising?
As for the copyright issue, well I don't know enough about the media industry, but I suspect that this is something everyone using the internet is going to have to confront sooner or later, and I'm sure that eventually a system will be devised along the lines of the music download setup. In the meantime can we just go with the flow?
Regarding membership/subscriptions, I am more than happy to contribute time and/or money to keep this great resource going.
Just let us know how we can help, and I'm sure the army of JRT fans out here will rise to the occasion.

Dear Jools...please, please, please keep this wonderful site going! I agree totally with everything that has been said in the last few posts, and I also would be very happy to contribute to the cost of running the site.
Between us we seem to find out what Julian is doing, and when, without the site we would miss out on a lot of things.
I also greatly value the friendships that we have made, which I am sure will grow over time.
I think you underestimate your technical ability, the site is wonderfully presented, and contains a mine of information.
I am happy to offer to help in any way I can, although I think that there are some very technically talented people on this site (Jennifer being one)
who could be very useful to you.
We all think the world of you & this site Jools, don't abandon us now!
Ducatilady.

I also agree with everyone elses comments and would be willing to pay something to be a full member of the site.
I belong to another site for another actor and on that one, we have a home page with just bits of trivia and past work that can be viewed by anyone. If you want to delve into the photo part and find out what he's up to you have to join. It is free to join there, but this site could have an annual fee.

Some great suggestions made above, and I too am happy to make a financial contribution and lend whatever support I can to keep the site going.
You've done a great job in bringing it this far, Jools and Hells, so let's hope that between us we can find a way forward. JRT fans are nothing if not determined!

Jools babes I would just like to say that I would be more than happy to contribute to the upkeep of this site. I think subscription and advertising is the way to go, and if I can be of any assistance in any other way just let me knoe. I really don't want this site to disappear.
Cello I wasn't expecting JRT to be there at the weekend ao he hasn't lost any brownie points with me, and at least I did get to see him on Wednesday which was a great night and was worth not getting home till 03.35am

I agree with the sentiments above too - you have done an excellent job and I'm sure that we could come up with some solution between us. How does the Stephen Mangan site run, or is someone paying lots for bandwidth there?
Us JRT fans must stick together! Unfortunately I don't have much 'technology knowledge' either, but I do have time at the moment as I am not working if that is any help!

You could set up a paypal subscription site, you know (and I'm about to show my sadness here) that sites that offer custom Sims run? That way people can contribute more when they want to and less when they need to?
I know I've taken that straight from a loans ad, but the sentiment's the same.
I still think this board could work on a free site. And thinking about it, I know that the main site is image-heavy and whatnot, but considering that the gallery is external and the videos are too, I think the site could cope being on a free server too.
I'd be happy to contribute with a redesign or even a full build on a free site if you so wish, m'lady...
(and Cello - I'm constantly in awe of you! Do you work in the industry, coz you seem to know so much!)
And thanks, Ducatilady.

If it came down to paying a subscription I would be happy to pay. The main site is absolutely brilliant and I do check it out most days, I'm afraid I don't get round to posting on the forum much because of moderating on the Green Wing Forum.
I could see the only problem with subscriptions is it might put off new people joining which would be a shame.
I can't see myself stopping from using this site just because GW has finished. I firmly believe that JRT is going onto bigger and better things, and that although there seems to be a lot of radio work, I'm sure there will be TV/film stuff as well, so we definately need a home to keep up with everything.

Hi Everyone
Thank you all so much for your lovely comments and some great ideas. I'm still working on a lot of the issues but am trying to sort out some of the more simpler ones first.
1. File hosting - As many of you are aware my audio file hosting has gone to pot recently so I'm in the process of transferring them all over to a new site. However once I've completed it I need to ensure they are accessed on a monthly basis or they ended up getting deleted (which means more work for me as I then have to re upload them again). Ideally I'm after a couple of volunteers who between them would log into the audio files (each end everyone I'm afraid) on a montly basis so it looks like the files are always been accessed. Any takers?
2. Costs - Thank you to everyone who is prepared to make a donation to the site. I'll be adding a donation button to the main page of the website so please donate whatever you feel comfortable with. I'm still thinking about making parts of the website subscription/donation based but have yet to get my head round the technical aspects of this. I don't wish to move the site to a new domain as I like to think that the site is professional enough to retain the right to the domain and wouldn't want to free up the domain to some awful sex advertising site or similar.
3. Copyright - I've made the decision that regarding audio files I'll only pop up adverts and radio work and nothing that you have to pay for (i.e. audio books). So far this seems to be keeping us safe and having images hosted elsewhere also seems to work.
4. My time - I'll be trying to limit myself to only uploading the site a max of once a week. Also to continue to help me out if anyone comes across any news/articles please continue to post them here and if you have access to a scanner please could you scan in the articles and send them to me which saves my time rushing out to newsagent's to purchase papers.
5. Technical abilities - How would like minded people feel about forming a group to discuss technical issues? I would really like to see the site expand and improve but am at my limit with my technical know how and have also run out of ideas...anyone care to help?
Thank you all so much for your commitment to helping the site continue and hopefully improve. I'm determined that we will win awards for the best JRT site on the net and the best forum ever! You're all FANTABULOUS!
